Our procedures in case of fire

Wharton Lodge Cottages Fire Safety Procedures

General Points

  • Smoking is not allowed in the cottages or Orangery
  • Lighting of candles is not permitted (QiT and Fire Officer)
  • Torches are provided for your use in the event lights are extinguished during a fire or power-cut. A torch is kept in the kitchen drawer and there are safety night lights, each with a detachable torch, in the living room and bedroom (Elgar), living room and landing (Harewood) and kitchen/dining room and second bedroom (Grosvenor)
  • Mobile phones should be taken to the bedroom at night
  • At night we recommend that the front door (Grosvenor and Harewood) is secured using only the latch at the top of the stable door (enabling escape using only the thumb lock). In Elgar the key should be placed on the hook inside the front door to enable the door to be opened from outside using a master key, in the event of a fire.
  • A fire blanket has been provided in the kitchen.
  • In the event of a fire, the assembly point is on the grassed area adjacent to the parking area and garage.

On Discovering a fire

  • If you discover a fire, evacuate the cottage shouting ‘Fire’ on departure and raise the alarm immediately by ringing the large corded bell at Wharton Lodge back door, opposite the cottages
  • If you have been trained and only if you feel it safe to do so, attempt to fight the fire using the fire blanket provided
  • If this fails, evacuate immediately. Do not stop to collect personal belongings
  • Children, the elderly and persons with disabilities should be alerted and accompanied off the premises
  • Ensure that no one is left in the cottage and close the doors behind you
  • Alert occupants of the adjoining cottages (there is a large, loud bell near the back door of the main house)
  • Ensure that you, or one of your party has telephoned the Fire Service on 999 or 112 giving the What3Words ref: awestruck.exacts.fantastic Please also alert Wharton Lodge on 01989 750140 or 07761502674 (in that order)
  • Ensure that all your party have moved away from the cottage on to the adjacent grassed area – "the assembly point"
  • Do not return to the cottage until it is safe to do so
